The Borough Council of Gateshead has issued a temporary traffic regulation order to facilitate resurfacing works on Follingsby Lane and Follingsby Interchange. The order, made on October 7, 2026, under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, will prohibit vehicles from traveling northbound along a 255-metre stretch of Follingsby Lane from its junction with Follingsby Interchange, as well as restricting access along the entire length of Follingsby Interchange.
The restriction is set to come into effect at 8:00 p.m. on October 13, 2026. Although the maximum duration of the order is 18 months, council officials anticipate the resurfacing works to be completed by 1:00 a.m. on October 18, 2026. During this period, only vehicles directly involved with the works and emergency service vehicles on duty will be permitted to use the affected roads.
To assist motorists, a signed diversion route will be in place throughout the duration of the works. The council has also indicated that traffic signs will be used to provide updates and guide drivers as necessary.
The order was formalized by Angela Simmons-Mather, Chief Legal Officer for Gateshead Council, at the Civic Centre in Gateshead. Residents and commuters are advised to plan accordingly and follow the diversion signage to avoid delays during the resurfacing project.
