Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has announced her separation from her husband, French player Gaël Monfils, citing personal challenges linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine. In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Svitolina, who is ranked sixth in the world in women’s tennis, revealed that the conflict had taken a significant mental toll on her, leading to sleepless nights and self-doubt.
“At the core of this decision was my need to rediscover myself,” Svitolina explained. “I realized I cannot do that within our marriage.” The 32-year-old athlete described the announcement as the most difficult she has ever made, emphasizing the emotional impact of the situation both personally and nationally. She praised Monfils for his understanding and respect during this difficult time.
Svitolina and Monfils, a former men’s world No. 6 from France, were married in 2021. The couple shares a daughter, Skai, who is four years old. Despite the separation, Svitolina was clear that their family unit remains intact. “Skai will always come first,” she said, underscoring that there is no blame between the two and that their relationship is evolving rather than ending in animosity.
Monfils, 40, was initially expected to retire from professional tennis following the Paris Masters tournament scheduled to begin on October 31. However, recent developments indicate he may have expedited his retirement, as he has been listed among the retired players internationally.
Both athletes have had notable careers on the ATP and WTA tours, with Svitolina reaching four Grand Slam semifinals during her career, and Monfils holding a peak ranking of No. 6 in the men’s game. Their separation highlights the complex interplay between personal lives and the external pressures athletes face, especially in times of geopolitical strife.
