A large tent collapsed during an outdoor event at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, on Friday evening, resulting in one fatality and injuries to 22 people, officials reported. The incident occurred as the church was commemorating its 20th anniversary.

Severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds, swept through the area approximately 124 miles southwest of Richmond, causing the tent to give way. According to Bedford County spokesperson Shelley Basinger, the collapse happened while attendees were in the process of leaving the tent.

Bedford County Fire and Rescue Acting Chief Abbey Johnston confirmed that emergency responders were quickly on the scene. Eleven individuals sustained injuries serious enough to require hospitalization, while another 11 suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the location.

Authorities have not released further details on the identity of the deceased or the condition of those hospitalized. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tent’s collapse and the weather’s impact is ongoing.
