A 21-year-old Pakistani national living in Canada has pleaded guilty to participating in a plan to attack a Jewish community center in New York City. Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, entered the plea in a U.S. court proceeding, according to a statement released by the Department of Justice on Thursday.
Khan was arrested in Quebec and charged with attempting to commit acts of terrorism that cross national boundaries. Authorities allege he sought to enter the United States to carry out a mass shooting using automatic weapons at a well-known Jewish facility located in Brooklyn.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about cross-border security threats and the efforts of law enforcement agencies in both countries to thwart planned attacks. Khan is scheduled to appear in court again on August 12 for further proceedings. If convicted, he could face a life sentence, although the final punishment will be determined by the judge overseeing the trial.
