An Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip over the weekend killed Ahmed Wishah, a cameraman for the Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera, according to the network. The strike occurred in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

The Israeli military identified Wishah as a Hamas operative, alleging he was involved as a sniper and was killed alongside two other militants in a targeted strike. In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the attack as a “precise strike” against Hamas personnel.

Al Jazeera condemned the killing, describing Wishah as one of their journalists and referring to him as the 12th member of their team to have died in Gaza since October 2023. The network characterized the incident as part of ongoing "crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces."

The incident highlights the escalating risks faced by journalists in conflict zones, particularly amid the heightened tensions and frequent military operations in Gaza. Both parties maintain contrasting accounts regarding Wishah’s role, with Israel labeling him a combatant and Al Jazeera affirming his position as a non-combatant journalist.
