Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) has named Abdulrahman al-Hababi, a 2014 electrical engineering graduate, as its Alumnus of the Year for 2026. Al-Hababi is the 11th recipient of the award, joining a distinguished group of former students recognized for their professional achievements and contributions.
Al-Hababi began his studies at TAMUQ in 2009 and credits the university for providing him with not only an education but also a community and a set of guiding values. Since graduating, he has held a key role within Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, where he led the long-term evolution (LTE) core network operations. His work ensured secure and reliable communications for public safety agencies, particularly during critical national and international events where resilient infrastructure was vital to maintaining public security and operational continuity.
Beyond his contributions to Qatar’s telecommunications infrastructure, al-Hababi has pursued advanced education, earning a master’s degree in cybersecurity from Hamad Bin Khalifa University and completing executive education through the Qatar Leadership Centre. He is currently working towards a PhD at Texas A&M’s College Station campus, focusing on machine learning, 6G communications, and other emerging technologies aimed at addressing global challenges in next-generation communications.
Cesar Octavio Malave, dean of TAMUQ, highlighted al-Hababi’s embodiment of the university’s core values—respect, excellence, leadership, loyalty, integrity, and selfless service. Malave noted that al-Hababi’s career exemplifies the combination of professional success, national service, and ongoing scholarship that the institution strives to cultivate in its graduates.
The Alumnus of the Year award has previously been presented to notable individuals such as Muna al-Mohannadi (Class of 2010), Yousef al-Jaber (2007), Mariam al-Meer (2012), and others, marking a tradition of honoring graduates who contribute significantly to Qatar’s development and beyond. Al-Hababi’s recognition underscores his continued commitment to serving Qatar, advancing knowledge, and fostering opportunities for future generations on a global scale.
