Tommy Castellanos led Texas Tech to a 34-26 victory over Arizona on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas, delivering a performance that proved pivotal for both teams’ Big 12 title aspirations and College Football Playoff positioning. Castellanos, stepping in as the starting quarterback in place of Will Hammond, threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown. His leadership and experience were highlighted by Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire as key factors in the win.
“This was great leadership from him. He plays with confidence,” McGuire said, emphasizing Castellanos’ ability to make significant plays in a high-stakes game.
Running back J’Koby Williams contributed a decisive 64-yard touchdown run and finished with 175 rushing yards, helping Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) extend its home winning streak to 13 games, tying a school record. This came one week after their 37-24 loss to Cincinnati, which resulted in Hammond’s benching.
Arizona (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) saw quarterback Noah Fifita pass for 417 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown to receiver Isaiah Mizell. Mizell recorded 182 receiving yards, marking his third consecutive 100-yard game, a milestone for the sophomore. Despite the strong individual performances, the Wildcats had their five-game winning streak broken and suffered the loss of freshman receiver R.J. Mosley due to a serious left leg injury.
Arizona coach Brent Brennan praised Fifita’s resilient effort. “Noah Fifita, what a warrior. Goodness gracious. He’s such a special kid,” Brennan said, acknowledging the challenges faced by his team.
Both teams entered the matchup tied for second place in the Big 12, trailing undefeated Utah. The closely contested game was described by McGuire as a "slugfest" and a “heavyweight fight,” reflecting the intensity and significance of the encounter.
While Texas Tech secured a key victory to bolster their playoff hopes, Arizona will look to regroup following the setback and injury to one of their promising newcomers.
