An 18-year-old Texas resident has been arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing that took place in Boston’s South Station in August. Marico Levy of Aubrey, Texas, turned himself in to authorities on Friday night, according to a spokesperson for the Suffolk District Attorney’s office, which confirmed the arrest Saturday morning. An arraignment date has yet to be scheduled.
Levy was wanted in connection with the Aug. 12 death of 29-year-old Latavious Owens, who was stabbed during an altercation in the busy transit hub. Owens, originally from Memphis, had traveled to Boston prior to the incident. Boston police have described their investigation as ongoing and clarified that the killing was not random, adding that the suspect and victim were known to each other.
The attack occurred during the evening rush hour on an escalator leading from the Red Line tracks to South Station’s lobby. Surveillance footage obtained by police captures the moment Levy approached Owens from behind and stabbed him in the neck. After the assault, Levy fled the scene, discarding a bag as he escaped into the stream of commuters.
Details about the motive remain undisclosed, though Owens’s family has said the violence stemmed from a dispute over a $25 cellphone bill. Law enforcement officials have not elaborated on any prior interactions between the victim and suspect beyond confirming that the stabbing followed an argument.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, which has drawn considerable attention due to the public location and circumstances of the stabbing.
