Thai authorities are investigating a school shooting that occurred on August 7 at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located outside Bangkok, which resulted in the deaths of at least five people. The 14-year-old suspect, who also died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, is believed to have killed his grandparents at their home earlier that day before traveling to the school.
Police discovered the bodies of the grandparents in their Nonthaburi province residence after responding to the incident. Investigators noted that the front door of the home was locked from the outside, suggesting the teenager left the house after the killings. Wattana Yichin, commander of Provincial Police Region 1, supervised the inspection of the property as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Preliminary analysis of the suspect’s computer revealed that he had engaged in violent-themed video games and conducted online searches related to a school shooting in the United States about a week before the incident. However, authorities have not confirmed whether these activities influenced the attacks. The investigation continues to focus on establishing a timeline of events and uncovering potential contributing factors, including any difficulties the teenager may have faced at school.
According to information from the suspect’s uncle, the teenager had lived with his grandparents since childhood. He was described as a quiet individual who spent significant time playing computer games and keeping to himself. The relative reported no known prior conflicts or apparent signs of distress leading up to the shootings.
The firearm used in the attacks was legally registered to the suspect’s grandfather. Thananyanporn, the 60-year-old younger sister of the grandfather, stated that the boy had lived with his grandparents following his parents’ separation. She described the grandparents as caring and loving guardians who took responsibility for the boy’s education and daily routines.
Thananyanporn characterized the suspect as a polite and reserved child who did not socialize much outside the home, instead dedicating most of his time to computer gaming. She expressed disbelief that family issues were a factor, emphasizing the close relationship among the three family members. She also noted the grandmother’s profession as a teacher and the grandfather’s background as a former bank manager who was reportedly gentle with his grandson.
The motive behind the shootings remains under investigation as Thai authorities continue to gather evidence and interview relevant parties. This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in Thailand since 2022.
