Thailand secured their 17th ASEAN Futsal Championship title with a 2-1 victory over Indonesia on Sunday evening at Nonthaburi Sports Stadium. The win reaffirmed Thailand’s dominance in the regional futsal scene in front of a full-capacity home crowd.
Indonesia took an early lead when Andres Putra scored in the 16th minute, raising hopes that the reigning champions could defend their crown. However, Thailand responded just before half-time when captain Itticha Praphanhan converted a penalty to level the score. In the 31st minute, Panut Kittipanuwon netted the winning goal, which proved decisive as the hosts maintained control for the remainder of the match.
In the third-place playoff, Vietnam delivered a commanding performance to defeat Australia 4-0, rounding out the podium placements in the tournament.
Meanwhile, in Thai domestic football, Buriram United faced Ayutthaya United under challenging circumstances. Ayutthaya’s challenge was hampered after Yasir Islame received a red card in the first half, reducing his team to ten players. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Buriram’s coach Mark Jackson noted that overcoming a team playing defensively with fewer players is not always straightforward. “Sometimes facing a side with fewer players can be difficult because they sit deep,” Jackson commented. “We kept pushing and eventually found the breakthrough.”
Buriram United are now preparing for upcoming commitments in the Chang FA Cup, the AFC Champions League Elite, and the ASEAN Club Championship, also known as the Shopee Cup. Jackson stated that the squad would take time to rest before traveling to Jeddah for their next continental fixture, signaling a focused approach as the team moves into the knockout stages of the AFC competition.
