Thailand and Malaysia have issued travel advisories urging their citizens to avoid or postpone non-essential trips to several European countries currently experiencing widespread protests. The warnings come amid ongoing demonstrations in France and unrest in other parts of Europe, raising safety concerns for travelers.
Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phungketkeow advised citizens to monitor the rapidly evolving situation in Europe closely. Speaking from Italy on Wednesday, he highlighted France as a particular area of concern due to sustained civil unrest. The French protests, driven by public discontent over the rising cost of living, have triggered some of the most significant street demonstrations in years. Smaller-scale clashes have also occurred in Italy and Belgium, while protests continue in Spain and Portugal.
Minister Phungketkeow mentioned that the situation in Italy had disrupted diplomatic activities, with his Italian counterpart compelled to cancel a bilateral meeting to attend an urgent government cabinet session addressing the unrest. He also expressed concern about ongoing developments in Spain. Based on these factors, he recommended postponing travel to the affected countries unless it was unavoidable.
Similarly, Malaysia’s embassy in Paris issued a statement on Sunday advising Malaysians in France to remain vigilant amid the protests. Although travel to France has not been officially restricted, the embassy encouraged citizens to consider delaying non-essential visits until conditions stabilize.
China has also issued a cautionary notice for its nationals traveling to France, following reports of violent demonstrations over the weekend. State broadcaster CCTV reported that town halls and retail shops were looted and set ablaze in several locations, prompting Chinese authorities to urge heightened safety measures.
These travel advisories reflect growing concerns about public safety as European countries grapple with social and economic unrest, underscoring the potential risks travelers may face amid ongoing demonstrations.
