In May 1944, weather conditions became a critical factor in planning the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, commonly known as D-Day. Initial expectations for favorable weather in late May appeared promising, with calm conditions and an unprecedented heatwave reaching 32.8°C on May 29. While May had initially been considered for the launch of the invasion, the operation was postponed to June 5 to accommodate the arrival of additional troops and resources.

The onset of June brought a dramatic shift in weather patterns as cold, wet, and windy conditions prevailed, driven by a series of Atlantic depressions. On June 3, Maureen Sweeney, working at the post office in Blacksod on Ireland’s west coast, reported a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure to the Dublin Meteorological Office. Despite Ireland’s neutral status during the war, meteorological data were shared with the United Kingdom. This particular report signaled an approaching storm and disrupted the forecast for the scheduled June 5 invasion.

Group Captain James Stagg, head of the Allied meteorological teams, relayed the deteriorating forecast to General Dwight Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces. Stagg advised that conditions would be unsuitable for the invasion, prompting Eisenhower to delay the operation.

As the storm moved in on June 4, a weather ship, HMS Hoste, was stationed several hundred miles west of Ireland. Despite the risks of breaking radio silence near enemy U-boat activity, Hoste provided frequent weather updates. On the afternoon of June 4, the frigate reported rising atmospheric pressure, indicating a temporary improvement. This information gave the Allied meteorologists grounds to revise their outlook.

Stagg conveyed to Eisenhower that while weather conditions were far from ideal on June 6, they would be sufficiently improved to permit the invasion to proceed. The prediction proved accurate as the Allied forces landed that day under challenging but manageable conditions. The overall poor weather had the unintended effect of catching the German defenders off guard, contributing to the success of the initial landings.
