The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to unfold not only on the ground but increasingly in the skies, where missile and drone strikes have escalated in intensity and scope. As front lines remain largely static, air warfare is shaping the war’s trajectory, impacting both military engagements and civilian populations in both countries.
Ukraine has intensified its aerial offensive, targeting Russian infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, including oil facilities from Siberia to St. Petersburg, ports along the Baltic and Black Seas, and warehouses of Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries. Ukrainian forces are using a range of weapons, from exploding drones and cruise missiles to nascent domestically produced ballistic missiles, aiming to disrupt Russian logistics and economic assets. President Volodymyr Zelensky has pledged to accelerate these efforts, which seek to increase pressure on Moscow by widening the war’s impact on Russian cities and industry.

Despite these advances, both countries face significant challenges in air defense. Ukraine is particularly strained by shortages of American-made Patriot interceptor missiles, which are among its few defenses against Russian ballistic missiles. Russia, while retaining a sizable network of advanced systems such as S-400 and S-300 batteries, must balance protecting front-line positions with defending its rear areas, including strategic military and industrial sites. The redeployment of air defense units closer to the front line leaves gaps in coverage elsewhere, which Ukraine has exploited by striking targets deep inside Russia, including an oil refinery in Moscow.
Russia is attempting to address these vulnerabilities through various measures, such as installing Pantsir missile systems on building rooftops to improve radar coverage and deploying naval vessels to guard northern regions. The country’s defense industry continues to replenish its arsenal despite international sanctions, utilizing foreign microelectronics and Chinese dual-use technology to maintain production of drones, missiles, and interceptors. Ukrainian officials have also accused Russia of supplementing its missile stockpiles with weapons supplied by North Korea.
Experts note that this aerial duel reflects fundamentally different capacities: Russia’s capacity to produce large quantities of standardized weapons contrasts with Ukraine’s more limited but increasingly sophisticated and agile arsenal. The ongoing intensification of missile and drone warfare over both Ukraine and Russia underscores the conflict’s evolving nature, with civilian populations bearing significant human costs amid a contested and expanding battlefield in the air.
