The Borough Council of Gateshead has announced a temporary traffic regulation order set to take effect from September 14, 2026, to facilitate essential infrastructure work. The order will restrict access for both pedestrians and vehicles along specified footpaths and roads to enable the installation of a new water mains network and subsequent reinstatement.

Under the terms of the order, which is made under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the maximum duration of footpath closures will be six months, while road closures could last up to 18 months. The council anticipates that the project will be completed by March 14, 2027.

Throughout the duration of the works, the affected footpaths and roads will be fully closed to traffic and pedestrian movement, with the closures enforced until work in those areas is finished. Traffic signs will be used to indicate the extent and timing of the restrictions at various stages of the project, ensuring clear guidance for residents and commuters.

To minimize disruption, the council will implement signed diversion routes for both pedestrians and vehicles during the closure periods. Residents and road users in the affected areas are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow posted signage.

The notice was issued on August 28, 2026, by Angela Simmons-Matcher, Chief Legal Officer for Gateshead Council, based at the Civic Centre on Regent Street. The council emphasized that these temporary measures are necessary to support infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing the local water supply network.
