A former office building in downtown Elgin has been transformed into The Bottle Department, a new bar featuring more than 250 craft beers. Located at 46 S. Spring Street within the historic Spurling Block Building at 40 DuPage Court, the establishment opened after significant redevelopment efforts in the area.

The Spurling Block Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, originally housed the main office of the Elgin Daily Courier before it merged and relocated. After sitting vacant and bank-owned, the building was purchased in 2014 by Dan Strojny and Legend Partners. In 2021, the city of Elgin approved an $11.3 million redevelopment project, supported by $3.9 million in tax increment financing. The project converted the space into 40 apartments with commercial usage on the ground floor, including The Bottle Department.

Co-owner Matt Willis, who grew up in Elgin and maintains close ties to the community, partnered with Madison Rodriguez and Chris Pietrini to establish the bar. The three were connected through Jennifer Fukala, executive director of the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin, who helped introduce them to Strojny. Willis described the process as collaborative, noting the support from the Elgin City Council as the team navigated licensing and zoning requirements necessary for opening.

Willis said his appreciation for craft beer began with an interest in the variety of flavors created from a few basic ingredients. The partners bring extensive experience from the craft beer industry, having visited numerous breweries throughout the Midwest and participated in beer tasting events.

The Bottle Department offers a broad selection of beverages, including over 250 craft beers organized by style, along with ciders, meads, canned cocktails, wines, and more than 40 nonalcoholic options. The venue also features 20 rotating draft lines, with one dedicated to a nonalcoholic choice, ensuring a dynamic range of offerings. While acknowledging challenges facing the craft beer industry, such as brewery closures and mergers, Willis emphasized their commitment to sourcing diverse, high-quality products for Elgin customers.

The establishment does not include a kitchen but encourages patrons to bring their own food or order from nearby restaurants, fostering partnerships within the local food community. The space can accommodate 90 guests and includes a private room for events. The name, The Bottle Department, chosen to reflect the variety of beers available and playfully reference its initials (“TBD”), represents the partners’ goal to create a distinctive destination in Elgin’s growing downtown area.
