Concerns about the impact of digital media on young people’s cognitive abilities have resurfaced with the rise of what some describe as “brain rot,” a term used to describe the experience of consuming endless streams of repetitive and seemingly nonsensical videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Recent research involving Generation Z individuals—those aged between 13 and 26—sheds light on how this trend reflects broader dynamics in social media consumption and its effects on mental focus and well-being.
Maxi Heitmayer, an assistant professor at Rowan University specializing in technology distraction and digital culture, co-authored a study exploring how Gen Z experiences and interprets brain rot. Participants described a state of mental fog and low selectivity after prolonged exposure to algorithmically curated feeds, leading to passive consumption of content. Rather than blaming the youth for cognitive decline, the study highlights the role of social media platforms’ business models that commodify user attention to maximize advertising revenue, often at the expense of content quality.
Interviews revealed that many young users are acutely aware of the manipulative nature of the content they consume but feel trapped within the attention economy. One participant described brain rot content as preferable to advertisements, since it “doesn’t demand anything from you.” Others suggested that deliberately absurd or low-quality videos function as a form of “anti-content,” allowing users a degree of freedom by subverting the commercial motives of platforms. This approach has parallels to historical artistic movements like Dadaism, which rejected traditional cultural logic in response to societal trauma.
However, ambivalence was a consistent theme. While brain rot provides a temporary escape, users also reported feelings of guilt, exhaustion, and concern over lost time and a lack of meaningful engagement. Some compared their viewing habits to addictive behaviors, recognizing the cycle yet feeling powerless to break it. The emotional conflict underscores the difficulty of navigating an environment where every digital interaction may be tracked, measured, and exploited for profit.
A majority of those surveyed expressed support for regulatory intervention, echoing calls for systemic rather than individual behavioral solutions. One participant likened the digital environment to the tobacco industry before government oversight, emphasizing the need for structural changes to shift social norms and user habits.
The findings challenge assumptions that brain rot signifies intellectual decline among youth. Instead, it illustrates how social media’s design optimizes for sustained engagement through cognitive depletion. Brain rot’s absurdity and collective recognition create a sense of community and authenticity within a highly commercialized media landscape, even as it remains embedded within the very platforms users seek to resist.
Experts emphasize that meaningful reform would involve redefining success metrics for digital platforms—from time spent online to user satisfaction with their engagement—and incorporating transparency and relief mechanisms to reduce cognitive fatigue. While technically feasible, such changes conflict with existing commercial interests, raising questions about the likelihood of voluntary adoption.
Ultimately, the research suggests that Gen Z’s brain rot phenomenon is less a symptom of careless youth and more an expression of the unintended consequences of an attention-driven digital infrastructure. Addressing its root causes may be essential to preserving the capacity for sustained attention, personal growth, and social participation in an increasingly digital age.
