Rami, a Saudi businessman and son of a prominent former Saudi minister, has endured a prolonged and complex ordeal involving detention, asset seizures, and legal proceedings spanning nearly a decade. His case has drawn international attention amid ongoing questions about the motivations behind his treatment and the conditions of his detention.

The situation escalated in September 2022 when Saudi officials detained Rami at his father Ali’s residence, following a call that inquired about the sale of the family’s former Dubai home and his possession of a Maltese passport, which he had obtained by investment in 2017. Prior to this detention, Rami had been subject to years of financial demands and monitoring. Authorities reportedly pressured him to hand over significant assets, including property in Dubai and London, under threat of imprisonment. His wife, Mira, has described the process as not a one-time event but rather a continuous system aimed at keeping Rami under control.

Rami was initially held in a prison in Dammam and allowed to communicate with his sister. During this time, he sought to cooperate by providing extensive company records from his Saudi-based business, Summit Technologies, to prove his innocence and clarify allegations. Legal proceedings against Rami relate to allegations dating back to 2010 concerning a purported conflict of interest involving his father and the supply of inside information from Saudi Aramco. Prosecutors accused him of benefiting improperly in a contract dispute and failing to fulfill financial obligations connected to a previous settlement linked to the 2017 Ritz-Carlton anti-corruption purge. Rami’s lawyers argue that the conflict-of-interest claims would usually be handled through civil or administrative processes rather than criminal courts, and that the signed settlement was obtained under duress. Rami was convicted in November 2025 and sentenced to six years in prison. His appeal was rejected in May 2026, although the family received the judgment weeks after its issuance.

Rami faces further allegations including attempted flight from Saudi Arabia and following social media accounts deemed hostile to the state. A hearing is scheduled later this month, with concerns from his family about the potential for further detention. Mira believes the persistent pressure is financially motivated, suggesting the authorities seek payments potentially exceeding $26 million to secure his release.
