Creta Palace, Grecotel’s flagship resort in Rethymno, Crete, has unveiled a comprehensive transformation aimed at redefining luxury hospitality on the island. The renovation, which launched in May, coincides with the resort receiving the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Award for 2025 and marks a significant milestone for the group.
Situated on Crete’s longest sandy beach—a 12-kilometer stretch of golden sand and clear turquoise waters—Creta Palace is the only luxury resort that integrates guests into the vibrant city life of Rethymno. The town’s Venetian heritage and maritime traditions form the foundation of the resort’s renewed identity, reflected in its design and cultural offerings.
The refurbishment introduces new rooms, suites, and family accommodations featuring contemporary Cretan aesthetics. Interiors incorporate cool blue tones, aquamarine textures, and lighter wood finishes, complemented by high-end materials such as crystal onyx countertops and spacious walk-in showers. The main building is anchored by a large-scale artwork from Greek artist Io Aggeli, which spans three floors and adds a distinctive blue presence. Public spaces emphasize a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, enhanced by gardens planted with frangipani, banana trees, and palm trees.
Central to the resort is an expansive pool area with four blue-hued pools overlooking the beachfront, complete with in-pool loungers. The newly opened Beach Club operates from sunrise to sunset, offering facilities for yoga, watersports, and seafront dining beneath tamarind trees and gazebos.
Wellness amenities include a renovated spa and a luxury gym with views of the pools. The resort’s dining portfolio has expanded to seven restaurants and four bars, featuring diverse culinary styles such as the poolside Brasserie Ariadne, an Italian Trattoria, Asiana, and the Sky Bar with Aegean Sea views.
A key feature of the upgrade is the Village Quartier, a themed neighborhood inspired by traditional Cretan folk architecture and local marble heritage. It houses the Kafenio, preserved since 1989, the Antica Taverna offering historical Greek cuisine, a Literary Salon, boutiques, a chapel, and a central square designed to showcase local customs. Family-friendly amenities within the Quartier include the Grecoland Kids Club, the King Minos clubhouse, a garden theatre, and a new Aqua Park. The adjacent Caretta Caretta Turtles Nature Discovery Centre focuses on marine conservation and environmental education, continuing a partnership with the Archelon sea turtle protection organization dating back to 1993.
Beginning in 2026, Creta Palace will join Grecotel’s Lux™me Edition, a luxury all-inclusive concept promoted as the premier holiday experience in Greece. Guests will also have access to Agreco Farm, a traditional working farm established by company founder Nikos Daskalantonakis, where visitors can engage in agricultural activities and learn about the farm-to-table process.
With its extensive beachfront location, reimagined accommodations, expanded dining and wellness options, and culturally rich Village Quartier, Creta Palace aims to reaffirm its status as a landmark of hospitality that combines the authentic spirit of Crete with contemporary luxury.
