The Einstein Tower in Potsdam, Germany, stands as a unique fusion of architectural innovation and scientific ambition. Conceived to test Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, the observatory departs from traditional designs with its flowing, organic forms that evoke a sense of motion and transformation rather than static solidity.
The tower was the product of collaboration between architect Erich Mendelsohn, a figure in Munich’s artistic avant-garde, and physicist Erwin Finlay Freundlich, an early German supporter of Einstein’s theory. Their partnership began during World War I, when Mendelsohn, then serving on the Russian front, was inspired by Freundlich’s plans to build a solar observatory. Unconventionally, Mendelsohn started designing through perspective sketches without a detailed program or knowledge of the scientific instruments to be housed, focusing first on creating an image that conveyed a new architectural language.
By mid-1918, Freundlich provided a basic outline for the structure’s function: a telescope housed in a 65-foot tower with an adjoining elongated room designed to direct sunlight via mirrors onto a spectrograph. This setup aimed to detect the gravitational redshift effect predicted by Einstein—the slight wavelength increase of light due to the sun’s gravitational pull—as a way to validate the theory of relativity.
Mendelsohn’s design unified the building’s components into a single, seamless entity. The entrance hall, tower, and laboratory flowed into each other with curves reminiscent of Art Nouveau, but the observatory’s shape also reflected modernist sensibilities. The tower’s vertical form, punctuated by deeply recessed, curved windows, stood apart from ornamental trends, expressing a focused purpose: a kind of periscope lifted from the ground to study solar phenomena.
Constructing the tower’s sculptural forms posed challenges. Though concrete was the logical material to realize the fluid design, intricate wooden molds were required for casting. Ultimately, much of the building was constructed using brick coated with stucco to approximate smooth concrete contours.
Despite Freundlich’s aspirations, the telescope did not produce the precise measurements necessary to confirm the theory of relativity during its early years. It was later repurposed for studying the sun’s magnetic fields. The building itself faced structural problems soon after completion, requiring renovations within five years and periodic maintenance since. Its modest size and somewhat makeshift construction contrast with the imposing impression it makes in photographs.
Situated within the Albert Einstein Science Park and surrounded by woodland landscaping designed by Richard Neutra, the observatory remains a significant symbol. Though it did not achieve all its intended scientific or architectural goals, the Einstein Tower endures as an emblem of the early 20th century’s efforts to merge scientific inquiry with bold architectural expression, reflecting humanity’s ongoing fascination with the cosmos.
