Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, Chief of the Air Staff, emphasized the importance of protecting space assets for national security and the stability of modern life on Earth. Highlighting recent behavior by Russia, he described Moscow’s activities in space as “unsafe and unprofessional,” citing incidents of satellite maneuvers and the deployment of projectiles that create space debris. Such debris, traveling at speeds around 20,000 miles per hour, poses risks not only to military satellites but also to commercial and civil space infrastructure.

The No 3 Space Effects Squadron is designed to disrupt, degrade, and deny hostile actions in space through non-kinetic means, primarily employing electronic warfare techniques such as pre-emptive jamming to prevent hostile satellites from interfering with UK assets. Smyth underlined that the squadron’s capabilities remain highly specialized and classified, in line with broader efforts to deter potential threats through both defensive and offensive measures.
