Ellie the Elephant, the mascot of the New York Liberty, celebrated her sixth birthday last Sunday with a lively event at Barclays Center attended by approximately 17,000 fans. The celebration featured dance performances, costume changes, and a halftime show involving more than 60 children aged 4 to 16 who had rehearsed choreography at the Brooklyn Basketball Training Center.

Ellie’s persona has become a distinctive symbol for many Black women and Liberty supporters, noted for her elaborate costumes and performances that pay tribute to iconic Black female artists such as Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim, and Whitney Houston. Criscia Long, senior director of entertainment for the Liberty, emphasized that Ellie’s cultural references are carefully selected and intentional, reflecting a thoughtful approach to her styling and presentation from head to toe.

For the birthday event, Ellie sported a glittery pink gown inspired by a sprinkle-covered doughnut, gem-encrusted nails, a ponytail held by a headband, and gold rhinestone shades sponsored by Sunglass Hut. Additional sponsors included Dunkin’ and Coach, whose branded products featured prominently in Ellie’s ensemble, underscoring her role as a hybrid mascot-influencer with a social media following exceeding 270,000 on TikTok.

Despite the commercial partnerships, Ellie resonates deeply with fans beyond her promotional appearances. Her choreography, hair styling—including a signature 72-inch Kanekalon braid—and interactive dance moves during game timeouts have become emblematic of her identity and connection to the community. The team behind Ellie has continuously evolved her look and performance since her debut in the 2021 season, transitioning from a simple curl to her current braided style, which is now a key component of her persona.

At the halftime show, the children performed their routine flawlessly, backed by Ellie’s on-court presence dressed in denim overalls and a pink shirt. Fans, including young attendees like Aubrey Heiligh and Salvador Dalmasi from the Bronx, expressed excitement ahead of the event, highlighting Ellie’s role as a beloved figure among families and young fans.

Ellie’s unique expression extends to nonverbal communication; she interacts with fans through pantomime during interviews and game appearances. The identity of the person inside the costume has been kept confidential, with Liberty officials stating that there has been only one performer in the role since Ellie’s introduction.

The birthday celebration also featured appearances by two other WNBA mascots, Violet of the Golden State Valkyries and Skye the Lioness of the Chicago Sky. The three mascots closed the event with a joint performance of Destiny’s Child’s "Lose My Breath," with Ellie notably taking on the role of Beyoncé, to enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
