Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has shown remarkable resilience in recent years, defying longstanding predictions of imminent collapse, according to the latest findings from marine scientists. Annual monitoring conducted over four decades reveals that coral cover—the proportion of living hard coral—has stabilized or increased across most of the reef, with the five best years on record occurring consecutively in the most recent period.
The coral cover is one of the key indicators scientists use to assess the health of the reef. After decades of decline, including a reported drop of approximately half since the mid-1980s, the reef has reversed course. In 2012, the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) noted that coral cover had fallen from about 28% to 13.9%, and projections suggested it could halve again by 2022. Subsequent reports frequently predicted a grim future, with some media outlets even declaring the reef effectively dead.
However, data contradict these dire forecasts. By 2021, coral cover had reached a higher level than ever previously recorded since regular measurements began in 1986. This upward trend continued through 2022 and 2023 and culminated in a new peak in early 2024. Despite this, official communications have often qualified positive findings with cautionary statements, emphasizing ongoing vulnerabilities and the potential for rapid decline.
In 2025, a marked decline in coral cover was reported, prompting headlines about the reef’s worst coral loss on record. Nonetheless, this drop occurred from an unprecedented high baseline, making 2025 still one of the top four years in terms of coral coverage over the last 40 years. Experts point out that natural disturbances such as cyclones, heatwaves, and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish—coral predators known for causing localized damage—drive fluctuations in coral cover.
Government investments in reef conservation—totaling more than 5 billion Australian dollars since 2014—have focused heavily on starfish control among other initiatives. Although managing crown-of-thorns starfish populations contributes to coral health, researchers estimate this accounts for only a modest increase of about half a percentage point in coral cover, far less than the overall rebound observed. Natural environmental factors, including monsoon-related cooling events, have played significant roles in supporting coral growth in recent years.
While recent bleaching events since 2016 demonstrate that the reef remains vulnerable to climate-related stressors, the repeated cycles of decline and recovery reflect the reef’s inherent dynamism rather than a trajectory toward collapse. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently declined to place the reef on its “in danger” list, interpreting this as recognition of effective management efforts.
Scientists caution that coral cover is variable and future surveys may show further decreases. Nonetheless, the consistent performance in recent years challenges narratives of an ecosystem in terminal decline. As monitoring continues each year, the Great Barrier Reef remains a complex and evolving environment, demonstrating a resilience that has persisted despite predictions to the contrary.
