Nassau, Bahamas—A powerful hurricane struck Nassau late Sunday night, causing widespread destruction across the island. The storm intensified rapidly, reaching sustained winds of approximately 130 mph by Monday evening. The hurricane’s arrival left the island in darkness after severe damage to the local power station.

Residents reported extensive damage to infrastructure as the storm uprooted trees and shattered windows throughout Providence Island. The harbor was particularly hard hit, with massive waves inundating the wharves and flooding nearby streets. The violent seas caused significant damage to maritime property, with the harbor-master confirming that around 50 vessels were either wrecked, sunk, or blown out to sea.

Once a popular destination for affluent American tourists attracted by its warm climate and scenic coastline, Nassau now faces severe challenges in the aftermath of the storm. Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage as recovery efforts begin.
