An exceptionally warm and dry summer across Europe has highlighted the growing health risks associated with increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, prompting renewed calls for public health measures focused on skin cancer prevention. In the United Kingdom, recent data shows that the annual number of new melanoma cases has surpassed 20,000 for the first time, underscoring the rising incidence of this form of skin cancer, which is among the most dangerous compared to basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.
The rise in melanoma cases partly reflects demographic changes, including an aging and expanding population—approximately one-third of cancer diagnoses in the UK occur among individuals aged over 75. Melanoma is currently the fifth most common cancer in the UK, trailing prostate, breast, lung, and bowel cancers, excluding other skin cancer types. However, the National Health Service (NHS) continues to experience strain in managing the growing patient load, fueling calls to strengthen prevention strategies alongside improved treatment access.
In response, a group of Members of Parliament proposed an advertising ban on sunbeds earlier this year, citing scientific links between sunbed use, tanning, and elevated skin cancer risk. This proposal follows expert recommendations to prohibit commercial sunbed use altogether, a policy already enacted in countries such as Australia and Brazil.
Australia’s longstanding public health campaigns provide a model recognized for reducing skin cancer risks. Since the early 1980s, initiatives like the “slip, slop, slap” campaign have educated the public on sun safety measures—urging people to wear protective clothing, apply sunscreen, and don hats. Australian schools commonly enforce a “no hat, no play” rule, barring children without head protection from outdoor activities in strong sunlight. While similar measures have been adopted by some UK schools, overall public awareness in Britain remains comparatively low, particularly in northern regions where intense sunshine is less frequent.
Experts warn that climate change is likely to increase UV radiation exposure in the UK, particularly in southern areas, heightening melanoma risks over time. The UK government’s National Cancer Plan has committed to further research on sunbed use, and health authorities are urged to reassess preventive policies in light of evolving climate conditions and behavioral trends. Some concerns have been raised about the influence of social media, with tanning apps and related content reportedly contributing to the growing popularity of tanning, especially among younger demographics.
Advances in oncology, including immunotherapy, have contributed to what some describe as a “golden age” for cancer treatment. Nevertheless, public health experts emphasize the need to balance investment in cutting-edge therapies with enhanced prevention efforts and improved access to established services. Skin cancer prevention, alongside measures addressing other behavior-linked cancers such as those associated with obesity and smoking, remains a critical priority.
Following recent legislative actions against tobacco and vaping products, health officials and policymakers face mounting pressure to intensify public communication on the dangers of UV exposure—both from natural sunlight and artificial sources like sunbeds—well ahead of the next summer season.
