The United States is advancing a comprehensive missile defense initiative known as Golden Dome, aimed at protecting the entire continental US from missile threats posed by countries such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. The program, driven by the Trump administration and scheduled to reach its initial operational capability by 2028, seeks to integrate a network of terrestrial and space-based sensors and interceptors, coordinated through an artificial intelligence–powered command-and-control system.

Golden Dome is envisioned as a “system of systems,” combining new and existing missile defense technologies to detect and neutralize threats in their earliest stages, potentially from orbit. Its core element—space-based interceptors (SBIs)—is designed to engage hostile missiles shortly after launch, before they acquire significant speed and altitude. This approach reflects a shift from current missile defense strategies that rely largely on ground-based interceptors and radars positioned in Alaska and California.

The program’s estimated cost has become a focal point of debate. Pentagon officials project a price tag of roughly $185 billion through 2035, which they characterize as a prudent investment in national security insurance. However, independent analyses, including a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimate, suggest the total cost could exceed $1 trillion over two decades, largely due to the scale and complexity of deploying thousands of space-based interceptors. The CBO’s assessment has been called overly broad by Pentagon leadership, who argue it was based on a hypothetical and static model that does not reflect the planned system’s evolving design.

Technical feasibility also remains under scrutiny. Experts note that developing and maintaining a constellation of orbiting interceptors capable of continuous coverage would require tens of thousands of weapons, replaced regularly as their orbits degrade. They further emphasize the challenges of ensuring seamless, high-speed communication between space assets and terrestrial control centers. Some analysts compare Golden Dome to the Strategic Defense Initiative of the 1980s—nicknamed "Star Wars"—highlighting parallels in ambition and technical hurdles.

Concerns extend beyond cost and technology. Academics and arms-control specialists warn that reliance on AI to interpret sensor data and guide missile intercepts could raise the risk of escalation and unintended conflict, particularly in a nuclear context. Moreover, the program may provoke adversaries to expand and modernize their arsenals in response, potentially fueling an arms race in space.

Despite these reservations, significant private-sector involvement underscores the program’s scale and strategic importance. Major defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin, RTX, and SpaceX, have secured contracts worth tens of billions of dollars. SpaceX alone has been awarded $8 billion for satellite and interceptor development. Additionally, the Space Force has allocated funds to companies such as L3Harris Technologies and Sierra Space to build satellites capable of precise tracking and data transmission, alongside contracts for AI integration with firms like Palantir.

Politically, Golden Dome faces uncertainties linked to forthcoming congressional elections. Some lawmakers have expressed reluctance to fully endorse what they consider an open-ended financial commitment. A Democratic House majority could challenge funding continuity, although current proposals include record Pentagon budgets with increased allocations for space-based defense capabilities.

The initiative is framed by officials as a necessary evolution in the face of expanding missile capabilities worldwide, including the development of hypersonic weapons and autonomous drones. Proponents argue that enhancing deterrence relies on casting doubt in potential adversaries’ minds about the success of any attack, thereby reducing the likelihood of conflict.

While the US currently depends on a combination of missile defenses and nuclear deterrence to guard against missile attacks, the Golden Dome program reflects growing concerns over the limitations of existing systems, especially given advances in adversaries’ offensive technologies. Whether the ambitious space-based component can be realized in a cost-effective and reliable manner remains a critical question as the project advances toward its near-term milestones.
