Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will continue to serve his 27-year sentence under humanitarian house arrest in Brasilia, following a ruling by the Supreme Court. Bolsonaro, 71, had been transferred from prison to house arrest in March after being hospitalized with bronchopneumonia. The initial period for his house arrest was set at 90 days.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated that the decision was based on the assessment that the home environment is the most appropriate setting to preserve Bolsonaro’s health. The former leader was convicted in connection with a failed coup attempt, leading to his lengthy prison sentence.

Bolsonaro’s move to house arrest has highlighted ongoing legal proceedings related to his conduct after leaving office. The Supreme Court’s ruling effectively extends the humanitarian measure, allowing him to remain under stricter medical supervision while continuing to serve his sentence outside of prison facilities.
