Peter Houghton and Anne Browning first met in 1997 in Melbourne while cast in a production of *Hamlet* with the Melbourne Theatre Company. Both single and playing lovers onstage, their connection began amid rehearsals and casual moments behind the scenes.
Houghton recalls their initial meetings as a mix of awkwardness and humor, often sitting together in rehearsal rooms, flipping through old magazines and making jokes to pass the time. A notable moment came when they stumbled upon horoscopes from the 1970s. Despite Houghton’s skepticism, a particular Scorpio reading struck a chord: it suggested meeting a future soulmate through work. Both shared the Scorpio sign, and though they laughed it off, the reading lingered in his mind.
Their bond deepened after a performance, when Houghton confessed to Browning that he had developed a crush on her. Her understated reply, “Well, that’s good. Isn’t it?” left a subtle but clear impression that she reciprocated his feelings. Over time, what began as a professional relationship evolved into a romantic partnership, marked by shared dinners, theater outings, and a bohemian lifestyle.
One early adventure together involved an ill-fated camping trip to Wilsons Promontory. Overpacked and unskilled at camping, they quickly realized their unsuitability for life outdoors, ultimately retreating to enjoy fast food instead. The experience, though imperfect, reinforced their compatibility and willingness to embrace each other’s quirks.
Throughout nearly three decades together, Browning and Houghton have built a life rooted in mutual trust and support. They have two children and continue to collaborate professionally as theatre artists. Houghton emphasizes that the longevity of their relationship is grounded less in romantic idealism and more in the reliability and teamwork they provide each other, particularly during difficult times such as personal loss.
The pair recently reunited on stage for the world premiere of *Crapbox*, running from October 27 to November 7 at the Explosives Factory in St Kilda, Melbourne, alongside Tom Gutteridge. Their story of creative partnership and enduring companionship offers insight into a relationship cultivated both on and off the stage, grounded in shared values and a deep-seated trust.
