Persephone Teng, a 24-year-old business graduate from Kuching, exemplifies a growing trend among job seekers aiming to enhance their prospects by gaining artificial intelligence (AI) skills. Currently enrolled in a two-week training course focused on integrating AI into workplace tasks—such as managing ledgers, handling daily financial transactions, and editing reports—Teng is preparing to enter the job market as a junior executive at an accounting firm in the Klang Valley. Although the job listing did not explicitly require AI knowledge, Teng acknowledges that proficiency in AI tools could provide a competitive edge.

Her efforts mirror a broader shift in entry-level employment shaped by the increasing use of AI technologies worldwide. A report released this year by the World Economic Forum highlights that AI is redefining the nature of junior-level jobs. Rather than performing repetitive routine tasks, newcomers may now engage in more judgment-based activities, such as reviewing AI-generated outputs, addressing complex cases with human oversight, analyzing trends, and ensuring seamless integration between AI tools and human workflows.

Industry leaders in Malaysia describe this evolution as a transformation rather than a reduction of entry-level positions. YK Lai, president of the Malaysian Industrial Commercial Service Employers Association (MICSEA), emphasized that while AI will significantly alter the functions of junior roles, it may not eliminate them. Instead, the emphasis is shifting toward roles that combine digital proficiency with analytical and critical thinking skills.

Supporting this view, a 2026 analysis from PwC Malaysia recorded an increase in AI-related job postings, growing from 1.9% in 2024 to 4% in 2025. The report noted that entry-level positions that involve AI are now more likely to demand advanced competencies traditionally associated with senior roles, such as leadership and strategic thinking. Leading organizations are reportedly leveraging AI to enhance human productivity rather than replace employees en masse.

Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman, president of the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), remarked that employers now seek junior employees capable of collaborating effectively with AI. New hires are expected to evaluate AI outputs, solve problems, communicate effectively, and apply technical knowledge in real-world contexts.

Historically, junior roles have been characterized by routine administrative tasks—data entry, basic report preparation, and scheduling—which are increasingly automated through generative AI. Lai pointed out that this shift may reduce demand for workers focusing solely on transactional duties, but it simultaneously raises expectations for digitally savvy, analytically skilled candidates. He suggested that the definition of “entry-level” is evolving such that fresh graduates might take on responsibilities once reserved for more experienced staff, enabled by AI tools that enhance efficiency and access to information.

Lai also cautioned that junior roles traditionally serve as foundational training grounds where employees develop essential professional skills and institutional knowledge. Eliminating these positions outright could disrupt talent pipelines. The solution, he argued, lies in redesigning entry-level jobs to focus less on routine tasks and more on cultivating critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, stakeholder engagement, and decision-making capabilities.

Ultimately, the future of junior roles appears poised to involve a more complex, sophisticated set of responsibilities, reflecting AI’s transformative impact on the workforce landscape.
