Historian and author Dr. Dean Allen has joined the world’s longest cruise as the onboard "explorations ambassador," providing expert insight and enriching the experiences of passengers on the unique voyage. The 371-day journey, operated by Explorations by Norwegian aboard the 348-cabin Oceania Regatta, departed recently from Rome and will visit 62 countries before arriving in Sydney on February 17.

Dr. Allen, a UK-born scholar based in South Africa, is part of a predominantly Australian, New Zealand, and British passenger group navigating this ambitious expedition. The cruise combines elements of river, ocean, and expedition travel, with options for shorter segments—ranging from eight days to the full itinerary—allowing for flexible participation.

As the explorations ambassador, Dr. Allen delivers lectures and is available to engage with guests, offering historical and cultural context at each port of call. His presence is centered at the dedicated Explorations HQ onboard, created specifically to enhance passenger understanding of the destinations they visit. According to Michael Middleton, global head of cruise at Ignite Travel Group and one of the key planners behind the voyage, Dr. Allen’s role has been instrumental in bringing each location to life for travelers.

“Dean has been a real hit,” Middleton said, adding that passengers appreciate gaining a deeper perspective on the places they explore. “You can wander down the streets of a port and say ‘ah, that’s what that means.’”

The cruise itself was conceived in Australia and aims to offer thematic experiences that resonate with its largely Commonwealth audience. Onboard offerings include familiar culinary touches such as Vegemite and Marmite, chicken parmigiana, and regular barbecues on deck. The entertainment program features live performances of popular classics, contrasting the traditional pre-dinner piano music found on many cruises.

While many segments of the voyage are close to fully booked, several cabins remain available for Australian itineraries during the summer season as well as for a 14-day cruise from Bangkok to Hong Kong scheduled for March next year. Another full world sailing is planned to commence in September 2027.

Dr. Allen expressed particular enthusiasm for upcoming Asian and Australian ports, noting that despite previous residence in Australia, the itinerary will allow him to visit parts of the country he has not yet seen. He also highlighted the personal satisfaction he gains from engaging with fellow travelers who share his passion for exploration.

“The ocean really is my happy place,” he said, reflecting on his role and the journey ahead.
