Pumpkin, a severely obese rescue cat, has become an unlikely social media sensation after being taken in by Chris Seelbach, CEO and president of SPCA Cincinnati. The cat arrived at the shelter in March following the death of her owner. Unlike many shelter animals, Pumpkin was not neglected or abused but was significantly overweight, tipping the scales at 25 pounds (11.3 kilograms). Her weight had impaired her mobility and breathing, presenting immediate health challenges.

According to Seelbach, Pumpkin’s condition was likely the result of overfeeding after having two litters of kittens. The cat was approximately five years old when she arrived and struggled to move, with bowed legs and a distinctive waddle. During an examination at the shelter, Pumpkin’s breathing became labored, underscoring the severity of her condition.

Seelbach and his team were able to speak with Pumpkin’s late owner’s daughter to gather background information. Despite caring for three cats of his own and normally hesitant to take in more animals, Seelbach was drawn to Pumpkin’s expressive eyes and unique way of communicating without meowing. He and his husband decided to bring Pumpkin into their home to integrate her with their other cats—Jerry, Doe, and Dottie.

At home, Pumpkin quickly adapted to her new environment but remained largely sedentary due to her weight. She was unable to jump on counters or climb stairs but adjusted to a new diet designed to aid weight loss. Since being adopted, Pumpkin has lost nearly three pounds and has begun to exhibit more comfortable mobility, even managing to climb onto the couch alongside the other cats.

Seelbach initially shared videos of Pumpkin online with modest expectations, but the posts quickly went viral, attracting millions of views and a large following. Fans have expressed strong emotional connections to Pumpkin, often stopping Seelbach in public to share their support and admiration.

The cat’s progress and popularity culminated in an official adoption and a birthday celebration on Halloween, marking Pumpkin’s estimated sixth year. Her coat has become glossier, and she appears more content and active within the household.

Seelbach notes that the combination of improved care and the positive energy from Pumpkin’s online audience has contributed to her ongoing recovery. The experience has highlighted the impact of fostering and adoption, and Pumpkin’s story continues to inspire many animal lovers.
