In September 2021, a group of three women undertook the challenging Three Peaks Challenge, a demanding endurance test that involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours. The route covers Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands, Scafell Pike in England’s Lake District, and Snowdon in Wales’s Snowdonia National Park, requiring participants to drive between the peaks.
The group included a mother of three who, inspired by her late sister-in-law Vicky—a woman who battled congenital heart disease until her passing in 2018—committed to the challenge as both a personal achievement and a fundraiser for the Somerville Heart Foundation. Vicky had lived with a hole in her heart since birth and despite repeated hospital stays, always maintained a positive outlook and determination to live life fully.
Preparation for the challenge involved physical training, such as weighted dog walks, running, and group training sessions with her friends Bryony and Helene, both also mothers. The challenge commenced with the ascent of Ben Nevis, standing at 1,345 meters, where on a cold and foggy morning they completed the climb while others, some underprepared, turned back early. After summiting, the team faced a five-hour bus ride with cramped conditions to the next peak.
Their second climb took place in the early hours at Scafell Pike, 978 meters high, under misty conditions and over loose scree that required careful navigation. The ascent took four hours, sustained by mutual encouragement and conversations that provided mental respite from physical fatigue. Despite having no sleep, the team maintained focus, aware that the final challenge awaited them in Snowdonia.
Following a three-hour drive to Snowdon, the group began the last climb with the aid of head torches in low visibility. At 1,085 meters, Snowdon’s ascent demanded both physical strength and mental resolve. While descending presented strain on the knees, going uphill posed a greater risk of falls. As rain intensified near the summit, wet boots slowed the pace, but camaraderie and determination helped the climbers persevere despite the adverse conditions.
Although the woman recounting the experience finished her circuit in 27 hours—beyond the official 24-hour limit required to complete the Three Peaks Challenge—she expressed pride in raising nearly £2,000 for the heart foundation. Meanwhile, public accounts confirm that the Princess of Wales completed the challenge within the 24-hour timeframe, underscoring both the physical intensity of the event and the dedication exhibited by participants.
