Mount Everest, situated along the border between Nepal and China, is experiencing notable environmental changes amid increased tourism and climbing activities. New research highlights the impact of Everest Base Camp’s expanding infrastructure and human presence on the retreat of the Khumbu Glacier, a key feature of the region’s frozen landscape.
Recent studies have documented the glacier’s accelerating melt, driven in part by the demands of supporting thousands of climbers each season. In 2023, around 1,600 tents at Everest Base Camp relied on substantial amounts of fuel and energy to provide modern amenities such as espresso bars, hot showers, fast internet, and heated flooring. According to the study’s lead author, Khim Lal Gautam, a geospatial scientist and Nepal’s chief survey officer, the energy consumption encompassed the use of 824 cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas, 18,935 liters of kerosene, and 5,130 liters of gasoline for cooking, heating, and power generation.
The human presence also contributes directly to glacial melt through the release of heat and waste. The study estimates that approximately three million kilograms of ice and snow are lost annually in the spring due to these factors. One particularly surprising finding is the role of human urine in accelerating the glacier’s thinning. At high altitudes, climbers and guides consume large volumes of water—more than 6,000 liters per day collectively—which is metabolized and excreted. While pit-vault toilets are available for around 2,000 individuals, much of the urine ends up on the glacier itself, causing an estimated 154 tons of additional ice melt each year.
Gautam emphasized the visible nature of the glacier’s decline, noting that the loss of ice is increasingly evident even to casual observers. The combination of warming temperatures, human activity, and infrastructure development at Everest Base Camp is thus contributing to the rapid environmental transformation of the region.
Mount Everest’s growing popularity and commercialization raise ongoing concerns about sustainable tourism and environmental preservation. The findings underscore the complex interplay between supporting expeditions and safeguarding the fragile mountain ecosystem from further degradation.
