Steph Spyro, Environment Editor at the Daily Express, has been recognized as one of the United Kingdom’s top 30 journalists under the age of 30. The accolade was presented at an award ceremony in London, where judges praised her impactful environmental reporting throughout the year.

Judges noted that Spyro’s work exemplifies sustained campaigning journalism that has led to measurable environmental outcomes. They highlighted her ability to employ a range of media formats—including print, video, and field reporting—alongside a direct and confrontational approach, demonstrating strong cross-platform skills.

Among her recent efforts, Spyro successfully advocated for the release of 14 penguins housed in the basement of London Aquarium, where they were reportedly deprived of fresh air and natural light. She also conducted an investigation in Cyprus with conservationists Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin into the illegal hunting of songbirds. Fluent in Greek, she engaged directly with a known hunter to expose the practice.

Additionally, Spyro traveled to Uganda with actress Maisie Williams to raise awareness about the endangered mountain gorillas, focusing attention on their conservation challenges.

Express Deputy Editor Sam Lister commended Spyro’s work, stating that she consistently produces high-quality content across all of the publication’s platforms, expressing pride in her achievements.
