In recent years, the United States has seen a notable rise in bookstores specializing exclusively in romance literature, with more than 200 such venues now operating nationwide. Among the pioneers of this trend is the Ripped Bodice, which opened its first store in Los Angeles in 2016. For a significant period, it was one of only two dedicated romance bookstores in the country. In 2023, the Ripped Bodice expanded by launching a new location in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
The store offers a broad range of romance genres to suit diverse reader preferences, from sweet romantic tales to more explicit narratives. The collection is carefully organized by subgenres, including contemporary, historical, and fantasy/paranormal romances, allowing visitors to easily navigate the extensive selection. Moreover, the bookstore features thematic displays, such as love stories set in New York City, and sells related merchandise, like pins themed around popular romance tropes.
Aside from book sales, the Ripped Bodice fosters community engagement through weekly events, including book launches and readings, which create opportunities for readers and authors to connect. An unusual highlight for visitors is the store’s restroom, which is adorned with Post-it notes where readers have shared favorite quotes and personal advice, adding a unique and interactive element to the browsing experience.
The Park Slope location is situated at 218 Fifth Avenue and maintains hours from Monday to Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The store also provides restroom facilities for customers. With its curated selection and community-oriented approach, the Ripped Bodice continues to serve as a leading destination for romance enthusiasts across the country.
