On a summer Saturday in Queens, New York City, a group of young adults gathered on a rooftop for an event featuring ice baths, live DJ performances, and fitness challenges. The atmosphere, marked by protein drink giveaways, matcha lattes, and pull-up bar contests, evoked the vibes typically associated with West Coast wellness and social scenes, particularly those in Santa Monica and Venice Beach, California.

This event was organized by Coffee & Chill, a company that originated in Los Angeles and has recently expanded its footprint to several cities, including Miami, Austin, San Diego, and, notably, New York City. Founded in 2023 by Blake Waller as an alcohol-free social gathering for friends, Coffee & Chill’s format involves combining wellness activities like cold plunges with socializing in relaxed, pop-up settings such as rooftops. While Los Angeles hosts many of their events in parking lots and Miami often stages them near pools or beaches, New York’s organizers have adapted to the urban environment by utilizing rooftops, sometimes improvising with local resources like bar faucets to fill ice baths.

Waller noted that while each city’s events carry a unique local flavor, there is a consistent core experience in terms of setup, merchandise, and brand partnerships across locations. “The L.A. events feel different than the Miami events, that feel different than Austin, that feel different than New York,” he said, emphasizing that local organizers lead each city’s gatherings to maintain authenticity.

In addition to Coffee & Chill, other Los Angeles-based social concepts have begun establishing a presence in New York City. RummiKlub LA, an upscale Rummikub game night series co-founded by Marnie Wekselblatt and Laura Galvan, recently hosted multiple events at venues such as Moxy Lower East Side in July 2025. The founders, originally from New York but now residing in Los Angeles, described their events as chic nights out combining gameplay with cocktails and socializing, aiming to differentiate themselves from typical board game meetups.

Similarly, SOSO Club, a Santa Monica-based singles meetup group, expanded eastward in response to demand from New York’s young professional scene. Co-founders Stephanie Scheele and Mackenzie Zoppi said their events cater to those seeking genuine, in-person connections after years of pandemic-related isolation and dating app fatigue. Since launching in New York, SOSO has held approximately seven events across Manhattan and Brooklyn, occasionally flying in founders to host or relying on a local team. While maintaining core elements consistent with their Los Angeles gatherings, SOSO emphasizes tailoring the experience to suit New York’s distinctive social culture.

The influx of West Coast social and wellness events into New York reflects a growing trend of cross-coastal cultural exchange in the post-pandemic era. Although New York has long been a hub for nightlife and social gatherings, these new offerings bring a curated, wellness-oriented dimension that is less common in the city’s traditional landscape. Conversely, some New York-based concepts such as Endorphins Running and The Dinner Table Club have also started expanding into Los Angeles, signaling a two-way flow of innovative social programming between the cities.

Overall, the arrival of these West Coast-inspired events in New York City has introduced fresh formats and a new energy to the local social scene, appealing to urban professionals eager for experiences that blend wellness, community, and style in a distinctly modern way.
