Yancopoulos’ career in science began at an early age, inspired by personal experience. Growing up in Queens, New York, he was driven by a desire to address his grandmother’s battle with dementia. His academic journey led him through Columbia University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, M.D., and Ph.D., and eventually to co-founding Regeneron alongside Leonard Schleifer, who manages the company’s business operations.
Today, Regeneron is focusing on a range of fields, including oncology and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The company’s new state-of-the-art preclinical manufacturing facility in Tarrytown, New York, facilitates advanced research using genetically humanized mice and automated bioreactors. In the competitive obesity treatment arena, Yancopoulos has taken a distinctive approach, targeting muscle preservation and the quality of weight loss rather than following a crowded market of GLP-1-based drugs. Regeneron is developing therapies that aim to protect muscle mass while reducing fat, thereby addressing risks associated with significant muscle loss, particularly in older populations. The company has also identified a genetic variant associated with sedentary behavior and is exploring a drug designed to modulate this "laziness gene" to promote increased calorie burning.
