The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised questions about its broader economic impact, particularly whether the surge in investment and resources directed toward AI is diverting capital and infrastructure from other sectors. Over the past year, AI-related companies have attracted a substantial share of venture capital and debt financing in the United States, sparking concerns about potential crowding out effects.
Recent data indicates that nearly two-thirds of U.S. venture capital funding over the last 12 months has gone to AI companies. Additionally, these firms, including hyperscalers, software providers, and data-focused funds, have accounted for approximately a quarter of the country’s investment-grade debt issuance this year. This influx of capital has coincided with increased spending on AI-related infrastructure, such as data centers and information-processing equipment, while other forms of private investment, including general office construction, have declined.
Some economists and industry observers worry that this focus on AI is straining shared resources. For example, the demand for chips and electricity from data centers could limit availability for other industries, particularly energy-intensive manufacturing or consumer electronics production. Similarly, companies outside the AI sector might face higher borrowing costs or tighter credit conditions due to increased competition for financing, though recent research suggests that any such effects on non-AI firms’ debt costs have been minimal and relatively contained.
However, this pattern has not gone unquestioned. Analysts have noted that AI investment might be stimulating additional capital flow rather than simply reallocating a fixed pool of resources. In particular, venture capital investment has remained strong despite higher Treasury yields, a factor that typically dampens such funding, suggesting a fear of missing out on transformative AI developments is driving investor enthusiasm. Some experts also argue that trends indicating slower growth in other sectors may result from unrelated factors such as expiring government subsidies, tariff uncertainties, or tighter monetary policy aimed at controlling inflation—issues not directly linked to AI’s rise.
International evidence offers additional context. Research from the Bank for International Settlements found that countries more advanced in AI adoption experienced stronger business and overall investment growth in the two years leading to 2025. This pattern suggests that AI-related activity has contributed positively to broader investment trends rather than merely shifting resources within a static economic environment.
Looking ahead, the share of AI investment in the U.S. economy is expected to grow, with projections indicating a rise from 1.8% of GDP this year to 2.8% by 2028. While this expansion may further highlight tensions over resource allocation and credit supply in the short term, many remain hopeful that AI’s long-term benefits—including potential breakthroughs in health and climate challenges—will justify the current levels of focus and investment. Nonetheless, stakeholders across sectors may need to monitor developments closely to ensure balanced growth and avoid unintended economic consequences as AI integration accelerates.
