Trevor Neo Yu Hin, an eight-month-old infant, died on September 2, 2024, in Singapore after enduring prolonged physical abuse by his parents, Neo Jia Ming and Chloe Gan Ci Xuan. The couple, aged 24 and 20 respectively, had married just four months before Trevor’s birth on December 9, 2023.

According to court documents, the abuse began shortly after the young family moved into a flat in Hougang. Both parents were found to have repeatedly inflicted harm on their son, with the mother shaking the baby violently on several occasions, bending his fragile neck nearly 180 degrees. The father was reported to have squeezed Trevor’s hands so tightly that it left bruises, and at times covered the infant’s mouth to the point of vomiting and turning purple.

The couple frequently attempted to silence Trevor’s crying by smothering him with blankets and hands. On one occasion in April, Neo inserted his hand into Trevor’s mouth, causing bleeding under the child’s tongue. Despite these injuries, the infant occasionally received medical attention at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), where staff observed some injuries but did not detect the full extent of the abuse.

Between January and August 2024, Neo and Gan regularly inflicted physical punishment, including pinching Trevor’s fingers multiple times a month and using force to cover his face with a blanket until he lost consciousness several times. Neo reportedly found Trevor’s reactions amusing, while Gan inflicted bruises out of frustration. Neo did not intervene to stop the abuse.

The fatal incident occurred on September 1, 2024. After dinner, Trevor cried while Neo and Gan were occupied with their phones. Gan repeatedly pressed a blanket over the baby’s face for close to a minute at a time, despite his struggles and cries. After several attempts left her arms trembling, she continued pressing down until both arms lost strength and she nearly collapsed. Neo did not intervene, continuing to play games on his phone. Eventually, Gan left Trevor face down in his cot and went to sleep.

Late that night, Neo discovered Trevor was not breathing and woke Gan. Emergency services were called, and Trevor was rushed to KKH, where he was pronounced dead at 12:22 a.m. on September 2. A nurse at the hospital filed a police report shortly thereafter, leading to the arrest of the parents the following morning.

On October 21, 2026, Neo was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment and Gan to 15 years and three months by Justice Hoo Sheau Peng, who noted in her judgment that Trevor had spent nearly his entire brief life enduring parental abuse before his death.

The tragic case highlights the challenges of identifying and preventing child abuse within the family, as well as the critical need for vigilance and intervention in suspected cases.
