Investment in artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating rapidly in Western economies, driven largely by major technology companies, but concerns are mounting over potential market overheating and growing competition from Chinese firms. Analysts and industry observers caution that the current pace and scale of AI capital spending may be unsustainable, raising fears of a potential correction similar to past technology booms.

Despite comparisons to previous investment surges such as the British railway mania of the 1840s and the 1990s broadband infrastructure expansion in the United States, AI's capital deployment remains notable but somewhat smaller. Data center and related hardware investments currently account for about 1.5% of U.S. GDP, considerably less than the 20% of GDP spent on railways during their peak era. Much of this spending is funded by the profits of established technology giants, distinguishing it from historic bubbles primarily fueled by speculative capital.

Market volatility among AI-focused companies underscores investor uncertainty about the profitability of this rapid expansion. For example, shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which recently expanded its computing power investments, have declined sharply from initial public offering levels. Investors appeared disappointed as the company shifted focus from aerospace to data infrastructure, illustrating the challenges in balancing ambitious AI-related investments with market expectations. Similarly, suppliers of high-end processors and memory chips—the so-called “picks and shovels” of the AI surge—have experienced a cooling of stock prices amid worries about a potential sudden drop in demand.

A major factor complicating the Western AI landscape is the intensifying competition from China. Since early 2025, Chinese firms such as DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and Alibaba have introduced AI models that rival or surpass some Western counterparts at lower development costs. These companies have adopted open-source strategies and more cost-efficient deployment approaches, enabling them to challenge Western dominance and penetrate Western markets. China maintains fewer data centers compared to the United States—under 500 versus approximately 5,400—but these facilities tend to be larger and more capital-efficient, potentially reducing financial strain on China’s broader economy.

Concerns also arise domestically as public opposition grows against the construction of new data centers in Western communities. In the United States, where technological innovation typically encounters fewer local obstacles, opposition has increased due to factors including aesthetic concerns, high energy consumption, and resistance to the influence of large tech corporations. Some political figures have acknowledged cybersecurity risks linked to AI technologies, advocating for more regulated oversight. However, U.S. President Joe Biden recently emphasized the imperative of maintaining a technological edge over China, stating that restraint should not imperil the American lead in AI development.

The intense competition between Western and Chinese AI sectors is expected to persist, with large-scale investments continuing despite risks of market correction. For example, Google’s commitment to supply over $150 billion worth of AI chips to Anthropic highlights ongoing confidence in AI’s growth potential, although it also illustrates complex financial arrangements within the industry. As companies and governments prioritize AI advancements, financial markets and regulators will continue to scrutinize the sustainability and implications of this rapidly evolving technological competition.
