Situated more than five hours by boat off the northern coast of Norway, well within the Arctic Circle, the tiny island of Myken is home to what is believed to be the world’s most remote whisky distillery. Despite having a permanent population of only about a dozen residents, the island has developed a unique identity rooted in whisky production.

The distillery’s origins trace back to a family sailing trip when Roar Larsen and Trude Tokle were forced to seek shelter on Myken during a storm. Inspired by the island’s maritime environment, which shares similarities with Scotland’s coastal climate, Larsen and Tokle proposed using whisky as a means to rejuvenate the dwindling fishing community. The couple enlisted support from the few residents remaining on Myken to establish the distillery and revive the local economy.

A decade later, the distillery has released its first 10-year-old single malt, named Ocean Heart. The whisky is noted for its delicate profile, characterized by light sweetness, orchard fruit notes, subtle spice, and a pronounced maritime influence, reflecting the island’s unique setting.

Ocean Heart is now available for purchase through select outlets, including The Whisky Exchange, marking a milestone in the distillery’s efforts to bring broader recognition to this isolated Arctic community.
