Payne Haas has reaffirmed his commitment to representing Samoa, effectively ending efforts by Australia’s rugby league coach Kevin Walters to persuade the prop forward to switch allegiances back to the Kangaroos ahead of the end-of-year World Cup. Walters had intended to meet with Haas to explore the possibility of the Queensland and NSW Blues player returning to the Australian national team, but Haas’s clear declaration of loyalty to Samoa makes such a move unlikely.
Haas, who initially declared his availability for Samoa through his heritage last year, withdrew from the Kangaroos’ tour of England, signaling his intent to play for the Pacific nation. He subsequently represented Samoa at the 2025 Pacific Championships. When asked about switching back to Australia, Haas stated firmly, "I’m Samoan, mate," emphasizing that turning his back on Samoa was not an option for him.
The 25-year-old Brisbane Broncos front-rower also addressed speculation about whether he might encourage Australian teammate Tino Fa’asuamaleaui to join Samoa’s ranks. Haas dismissed the idea, saying he respected the choices of his peers and would not attempt to influence them. “We are all men so they can make their own decisions and do what is right for him,” he said.
Haas’s prominence in the NRL continues to rise, with many observers considering him among the best front-rowers in the competition. However, questions remain regarding his performances in the State of Origin series, where his statistics have not matched his club form. Haas downplayed such comparisons, saying he focused on fulfilling his role for the team rather than individual accolades. “I’m just here to do my job. Whatever the boys need, I will do,” he said. “I’m not really bothered by that kind of talk. I just want to win the game.”
Beyond his on-field career, Haas emphasized his priorities off the field, stating that being the best father, family man, and partner was most important to him. He described himself as someone who does not pay much attention to praise or legacy, instead focusing on consistent effort and taking things day by day.
With Samoa set to benefit from the ongoing commitment of one of rugby league’s leading props, Australia’s coaching staff will continue preparing their squads ahead of forthcoming representative fixtures, including the NSW Blues’ upcoming first field session scheduled for Thursday.
