Fans from around the world have gathered to support Argentina at the FIFA World Cup, despite many having no Argentine nationality. At the Texas stadium hosting Argentina’s final group match, supporters donning blue-and-white jerseys bearing Lionel Messi’s name have arrived early, eager to witness the team’s performance and the iconic player in person.
Among them is 32-year-old Sabid Ahamed from Bangladesh, who is currently pursuing a PhD in the United States. Accompanied by his wife Rahima and their seven-month-old son, also clad in an Argentina jersey, Ahamed expressed excitement ahead of the game against Jordan. His enthusiasm stems from a long-standing admiration for Argentina’s team, inspired by his father’s admiration for Diego Maradona. Ahamed paid approximately $900 to attend the match, viewing it as the fulfillment of a dream to see Messi play live after following the team since the 2010 World Cup.
Similarly, 42-year-old Indian fan Baban Banerjee identified himself as a “diehard” Messi supporter. He secured a ticket for $700, motivated by the belief that this World Cup would be Messi’s last. Banerjee said he would cheer for his home country if India faced Argentina but admitted he would not mind seeing Messi score against them. When Messi began the match on the bench owing to Argentina already securing qualification, Banerjee remained hopeful he would enter the game later—and scored from a free-kick after coming on in the second half.
Support for Argentina also came from a Chinese family who said their allegiance dates back more than three decades to when they first watched Maradona play. Though China’s national team qualified only once for the World Cup in 2002 without scoring, the family expressed no concern about choosing sides should the unlikely match-up arise.
From the Dominican Republic, Mercedes, age 59, arrived with her teenage granddaughter decked out in Argentina gear. She clarified her loyalty was to Messi rather than the national team itself, acknowledging the unconventional nature of her fandom.
These international supporters reflect a devotion to Argentina’s team and Messi that transcends national borders. Some highlighted a pragmatic loyalty to their countries of origin should they face Argentina, while others focused solely on their admiration for the football legends. Their dedication illustrates the widespread global appeal surrounding the World Cup and the enduring legacy of players like Messi and Maradona.
