A new study suggests that measuring thigh length could serve as a simple method to help detect type 2 diabetes, a condition affecting millions worldwide. Researchers in Denmark have developed an online self-assessment tool called MEDWACS, which incorporates thigh length measurement alongside other indicators to identify individuals at risk of prediabetes and undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90% of diagnosed diabetes cases in the United Kingdom, where more than four million people currently live with the condition. It is also estimated that an additional 1.3 million people have diabetes but remain undiagnosed. The slow progression of symptoms such as fatigue, increased thirst, and frequent urination often results in delayed diagnosis, complicating early intervention efforts.

Dr. Daniel Yoo, a researcher at the Technical University of Denmark involved in the study, emphasized the challenge of diagnosing type 2 diabetes early without suspicion of the disease. He noted that while a blood test can easily confirm the diagnosis, many individuals do not seek medical testing without initial warning signs. The MEDWACS tool aims to address this by providing an easy-to-use online screening test that can encourage timely medical consultation.

The development of MEDWACS drew on three decades of health data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States. The test evaluates seven distinct parameters alongside basic demographic information, including sex, age, and body mass index (BMI). Participants complete the assessment at home using readily available items such as a tape measure, a bathroom scale, and a blood pressure monitor.

One notable finding from the research was the association between shorter thigh length and increased diabetes risk. Researchers explained that femur length reflects nutritional status during early childhood, as inadequate nutrition during this critical period can stunt bone growth. This early-life nutritional deficit appears to correlate with a heightened risk of developing diabetes later in life.

Additionally, the thigh houses the body's largest muscle groups, which play a key role in glucose metabolism by removing sugar from the bloodstream. Shorter legs may indicate reduced muscle mass, potentially lowering the body's capacity to absorb glucose and thereby increasing susceptibility to type 2 diabetes.

The MEDWACS tool, tested in populations in both the United States and South Korea, demonstrated strong effectiveness in identifying individuals with prediabetes and undiagnosed diabetes, suggesting its potential utility as a non-invasive initial screening method. Further studies may help to refine this approach and support broader adoption in public health efforts to improve early detection of diabetes.
