Domestic and foreign investment activities are showing renewed interest in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Myanmar, as reported during the 13th annual general meeting of Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings Public Co Ltd (MTSH) on October 23.
During the current financial year, MTSH’s partner company, Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development (MJTD), successfully secured long-term leases on 9.64 acres within the zone. This development supports infrastructure readiness across a total of 67.56 acres, allowing investors to commence construction and operational activities without delay.
MTSH Chairman U Win Aung emphasized the ongoing engagement with potential investors, noting that both domestic and international factory operators have been actively consulting with the company regarding opportunities within the SEZ. The company’s efforts aim to facilitate prompt investment and industrial development in the designated area.
The Thilawa SEZ, jointly developed by Myanmar and Japan, has been a focal point for industrial growth, offering streamlined infrastructure and regulatory frameworks to attract manufacturing and export-oriented businesses. The renewed leasing activity signals a positive trend toward economic revitalization within the zone, despite challenges posed by the broader political and economic environment in Myanmar.
The continued interest from investors reflects confidence in the zone’s strategic positioning and operational readiness, highlighting Thilawa SEZ’s role as a significant driver of foreign direct investment in the country.
