Jill Clancy, a 56-year-old fitness enthusiast from Ayrshire, has shared the story of her transformative weight-loss journey that resulted in shedding more than eight stone. The process began unexpectedly in 2020 when Jill experienced a knee injury while walking her dogs. Medical examination revealed a meniscus tear that required surgery, forcing her to take time off work and confront concerns about her future health and mobility.
Facing the prospect of limited physical activity, Jill decided to make significant lifestyle changes. She joined the Slimming World program, motivated by a desire to regain control over her life and improve her well-being. “I had just turned 50 and I didn't want to be an old, crippled 50-year-old out of work, so I knew I had to do something about it,” Jill said.
Since embarking on her weight-loss effort, Jill has lost 8 stone 6 pounds, moving from close to a size 24 to fitting into sizes 8 and 10. Her weight loss has been accompanied by a newfound passion for exercise, including participation in 10-kilometre runs and training for her first half marathon. She has also taken part in endurance events such as Hyrox, Hybrid, and the Gauntlet, with aspirations of completing a full marathon in the near future.
Jill’s diet and fitness regimen underwent a comprehensive transformation. Previously, although she maintained some healthy habits, she admitted to regularly consuming foods like crisps, cheese, wine, and takeaways, which often undermined her efforts. Her activity was limited to occasional gym visits and walking her dogs, but she struggled with self-consciousness.
Today, Jill’s meals focus on vegetables and protein-rich foods, including eggs, chicken, sardines, salmon, and steak. She also emphasizes portion control, weighing milk and choosing pre-portioned cheese, while cutting out foods that previously triggered overeating. Her freezer is stocked with homemade meals such as chili, bolognese, and soups, supporting her commitment to balanced nutrition.
Reflecting on the changes, Jill credited the Slimming World group for their support and acknowledged how the journey has significantly boosted her confidence and altered her overall outlook on life. “It will change your life if you want it to. I am proud of what I've achieved and I can only thank Slimming World and especially my group. I am now living my life to the fullest,” she said. Jill also expressed a wish that she had begun this lifestyle change decades earlier.
