While free EV charging remains available at certain malls, hotels, and private locations in the UAE, determining which stations offer complimentary service can often require trial and error.
The PlugShare app, a crowd-sourced digital map widely used by EV drivers worldwide, has become a popular resource in the UAE for tracking available charging points. Available on both iOS and Android platforms, the app allows users to register via Google, Apple accounts, or email, and customize their profiles by adding their specific EV model to filter charger compatibility.
Once logged in, the app centers on the user’s current location, displaying nearby charging stations as map pins. Selecting a pin reveals detailed information about the station, including connector types, charging speeds, and a live feed of recent check-ins by other users. The app also features a trip planner to assist drivers on longer journeys.
A key feature of PlugShare is its ability to filter stations by cost, enabling users to narrow search results exclusively to free chargers. This filter can be combined with compatibility settings, so users only see free stations suited to their vehicle’s requirements. However, since the platform relies heavily on user-generated data, its accuracy depends on frequent, active updates from the EV community. Stations marked as free by hosts may change their pricing policies without immediate reflection on the app, and listings can become outdated if not regularly maintained.
In addition to PlugShare, official networks such as the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) app provide nationwide EV charging information, offering another resource for drivers navigating the expanding UAE charging infrastructure. Together, these tools seek to improve the transparency and convenience of EV charging options as electric vehicle adoption continues to grow in the region.
