England head coach Thomas Tuchel has highlighted the notable resurgence of Marcus Rashford’s international career following the striker’s recent goal against Croatia. Speaking after England’s performance in Dallas on Wednesday, Tuchel reflected on Rashford’s journey back to prominence with the national team, a revival that coincided with both his loan move to Aston Villa and Tuchel’s own appointment at the Football Association.

Rashford’s international prospects had waned following his omission from England’s squad for the Euro 2024 final in Germany, which marked a low point after a promising start that saw him feature in four consecutive major tournaments beginning as an 18-year-old. Off the field, Rashford’s commitment to social causes was recognised with an MBE for his campaign to extend free school meals during the Covid pandemic.

Tuchel described Rashford’s loan move to Aston Villa in early 2025 as a courageous step. He praised Aston Villa’s emphasis on teamwork and defensive discipline, which Rashford embraced to rejuvenate his form. “I felt that his loan was brave,” Tuchel said, noting Rashford’s steady development under the management of Unai Emery, whom those close to Rashford compare to figures like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger. Since returning to the England squad under Tuchel, Rashford has been a consistent presence, with the coach commending the striker’s professionalism, calmness, and openness during training camps.

Rashford’s difficulties in recent years were well documented. His relationship with Manchester United deteriorated amid disciplinary issues and a dip in performance. He was dropped by former United manager Erik ten Hag after arriving late to a team meeting and clashed again over a nightclub visit following a heavy derby defeat. Reports of Rashford feigning illness while attending a party in Belfast led to fines and further exclusion from the team. His goal tally fell sharply, from 30 in the 2022-23 season to eight in 43 appearances the following year. Under Ruben Amorim, who took over at United in November 2024, Rashford’s professional work ethic was questioned, ultimately leading to his loan departure after a two-decade association with the club.

The change of environment in Birmingham gave Rashford an opportunity to reset away from the intense scrutiny in Manchester, allowing him to focus on regaining form under Emery’s guidance. Tuchel emphasized Rashford’s consistent positive attitude in recent weeks, both as a starter and off the bench, and his ability to quickly translate tactical discussions into effective play on the field. “He is totally invested in every meeting. He is very, very fast in translating a meeting on to the pitch, on one tactic,” Tuchel said.

Rashford’s revival stands as an example of how strong leadership and a fresh setting can help a player regain confidence and reestablish themselves at the highest level.
