Thomas Tuchel has emphasized the importance of England maintaining focus on their upcoming knockout match against DR Congo, cautioning the team against looking ahead to potential future opponents. England secured first place in Group L following their victory over Panama on Saturday at MetLife Stadium, where they hope to return for the final in three weeks.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane each scored to ensure England’s continued progress and set up a round-of-32 encounter with DR Congo, who were confirmed as their next opponent after a 3-1 comeback win against Uzbekistan in Atlanta. The potential following matchup could see England face co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium early next week, but Tuchel was clear that the team’s priority must remain on the immediate challenge.

“There is only one match we can focus on and that is the next match,” Tuchel said. He warned that getting distracted by the knockout stage’s possible scenarios could lead to England being punished on the field. “We have a difficult match coming up,” he added. “It’s not Mexico, not in Mexico, it’s in Atlanta and we need to be ready.”

Ranked 41st in the world, DR Congo qualified as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stage. England’s recent performances have highlighted challenges in breaking down defensively disciplined opponents, exemplified in their goalless draw against Ghana and a tougher-than-expected win against Panama. Tuchel acknowledged these issues but expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to adapt as the tournament progresses.

He recalled the opening 4-2 victory over Croatia, describing it as a high-intensity encounter akin to a knockout game. “The intensity in the second half and the tension that suddenly grew” demonstrated the team’s capacity to handle pressure, Tuchel noted. He also emphasized the experience within the squad, with many players accustomed to competing at the highest levels in club competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League.

“We know what needs to get better,” Tuchel said. “It’s important that we keep believing, keep focusing on what we can influence and where we can improve,” underlining the team’s resolve as they prepare for Wednesday’s match in Atlanta.
