Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have issued warnings regarding potential burn and injury hazards associated with certain squishy and slime toys, especially those of uncertain origin. The Child Safety division, affiliated with the Sharjah Family and Community Council, has advised parents and caregivers to exercise caution when children use these products.

The advisory highlights that squishy toys often contain a variety of materials such as gelatinous substances, liquids, powders, or water beads. When the outer casing of these toys becomes damaged or torn, children may come into direct contact with the potentially harmful contents inside.

Water beads, in particular, have been singled out as a significant risk if ingested. These small gel-like beads can pose choking or internal injury risks to young children, according to the safety authority.

In addition to concerns over physical contact with the toy’s contents, the Child Safety division referred to a warning issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The US regulator cautioned against videos that demonstrate placing squishy toys in microwave ovens to make them expand or deform. This practice can lead to the toys exploding under heat, releasing hot substances that may cause burns and adhere to the skin.

The recent warnings urge vigilance in selecting and monitoring play with squishy and slime toys, emphasizing the importance of supervising children and choosing products from reputable sources to reduce the risk of injury.
