Thousands of individuals accused of sex-related offenses have been released on bail while awaiting trial as part of efforts to alleviate prison overcrowding. This marks a shift from previous practices where many of these suspects would have been held in custody pending court proceedings.

A judicial note distributed in March outlined that changes to the Sentencing Act were intended to reduce strain on the correctional system. According to official figures, 5,517 alleged sex offenders were granted bail in the past year under these revised guidelines.

However, concerns have been raised regarding compliance with bail conditions. A government report warned that up to half of those released could violate the terms set for their bail, highlighting potential risks associated with the policy change.

Authorities maintain that the decision balances the need to manage prison populations while upholding justice processes, but the policy has prompted debate over public safety and judicial responsibility.
